How to Buy a Food Processor

How to Buy a Food Processor

A food processor makes quick work of chopping, slicing, shredding, mixing dough, and more. Whether you’re shopping for your first food processor or upgrading to a machine that has all the bells and whistles, Walmart carries a model that’s perfect for you. Just keep the end use in mind, and consider some key features:

Capacity

Food processors vary in size from approximately 3 cups up to 14 cups. A large capacity food processor offers the greatest versatility. Consider a smaller capacity when preparing food for one or two, or if storage space is limited. Some large food processors offer an optional mini bowl insert for smaller jobs. A 14-cup processor can often handle everything from delicate jobs like making fresh breadcrumbs and pie dough to tougher tasks like chopping, slicing, and shredding.

Feeder Chute

Check the size of the feeder chute. To slice larger pieces of food or whole foods, such as tomatoes, purchase a food processor with an extra large feeder chute. If you choose a processor with a smaller chute, coarsely chop food before inserting it in the chute to prevent it from getting lodged. An adjustable large mouth feeder chute can accommodate whole foods such as potatoes and onions, as well as smaller foods such as carrots.

Controls

Choose a food processor with controls that are easy to access and operate, whether a lever, knob, or touch pad. Some food processors have more than one speed and most have the ability to pulse “on” and “off.” Pulsing prevents accidental over-processing. For example, it is best to pulse nuts to prevent inadvertently blending them into peanut butter.

Attachments

Look for a food processor with a standard blade for chopping and blending, as well as a reversible slicing and shredding disc. Some processors include crinkle-cut discs; whip attachments for beating, and juicers for citrus fruits. Choose stainless steel parts for durability and make sure they are easy to remove for cleaning.
