Healthy, Easy Asian Food: Rolls & Wraps

They taste good. They’re healthy. Plus they’re easier to make than you think. Asian rolls and wraps are popular with everyone — even with the pickiest eaters. You can stuff rolls and wraps with all sorts of fillings and serve them as appetizers or for lunch and dinner. Three Varieties to Choose From Start with one of the three basic types of Asian rolls and wraps: - Fresh Spring Rolls: Make these with ready-made, rice paper wrappers that are so thin you can almost see through them. Instead of cooking them, soften the wrappers in very hot water. Fill them with your favorite cut, cooked ingredients and roll them up like ice cream cones.
- Lettuce Wraps: Use packaged Lettuce Jammers™ (available only at Wal-Mart), which are curved like a cup and just the right size. Brown your filling ingredients in a skillet and spoon some into each leaf. Wrap the lettuce around the filling and eat it like a burrito.
- Deep Fried Rolls: Create these crispy rolls by filling special store-bought egg roll wrappers (that look like thin pancakes) with finely chopped, cooked vegetables. Fry them in oil until golden brown and eat with your fingers.
A World of Ingredients Rolls and wraps are so popular because you can fill them with nearly anything: - Vegetables: Fresh or frozen, it doesn’t matter — green or white cabbage, carrots, snow peas , bean sprouts, cucumbers and red peppers
- Meat: Pork, beef and chicken
- Seafood: Fish and shrimp
- Eggs: Scramble them first
- Fruit: Pineapple, apples and raisins
- Noodles and rice: Including healthy brown and whole-grain types
- Herbs: Basil, cilantro, mint
- Sauces: Soy, peanut, sesame and sweet-and-sour
Great Guest Fare Rolls and wraps are super for parties. Add a serving of rice or noodles and a salad to the deep fried rolls and you have a complete meal. Invite guests to make their own spring rolls and lettuce wraps. Set out the ingredients in colorful bowls and let your guests choose what they want, which is always great fun.
