
I became a teacher five years after becoming a mom;
just as my son was entering first grade. I thought that being a mom would make
me a better teacher, but, in fact, I think I've become a more effective parent
because of what I've learned as a teacher. I realize now that children do best
when their parents try to help them succeed in school not in terms of grades,
