Last-Minute Party Planning

Planning a party on short notice can be easy — all you need is the right strategy. Use these helpful tips to get started.

Get Organized

  • Sitting down to list all your supplies is the best time-saver of all. Planning ahead helps you get everything you need in one shopping trip.
  • Email invitations. Prepare one invitation, and send it to all your guests at once. Most online invitation sites are free and will also track RSVPs.
  • Many people hate showing up empty-handed. Get your party guests involved and save time — have everyone bring a favorite appetizer or dessert. Your online invitation system can help coordinate who’s bringing what.
Shop Smart

  • Visit your local Walmart to get all the food, decor and supplies in one convenient location. Shop the day before the party. This’ll give you more time to get your house, your family and yourself ready on the big day.
  • Avoid the time and expense of serving a full meal. Stick with drinks and a variety of easy appetizers like pretzels, nuts, chips and dip. Buy ready-to-serve party platters at the Deli that include dipping sauces. Party platters are available for a wide variety of foods, including shrimp cocktail, veggies, fruit, meat, cheese and sandwiches.
  • Set on serving a meal? Keep it simple with one hearty course. Prepare a filling chili or stew ahead of time in the slow cooker. Consider other one-dish meals as well, like lasagna or shepherd’s pie, that can be served with easy side dishes like salad and bread.
  • Buy disposable plates, cups, silverware and napkin sets that match your theme. Try to pick recyclable and biodegradable versions. Guests can clean up as they go by throwing away their own dishes.
Set Up

  • Clean your house the morning of the party. Focus on the kitchen, main living areas and the bathroom your guests will use. Don’t stress over extra bedrooms and bathrooms your guests will never see — that’s what doors are for!
  • You don’t need elaborate decor to throw a fun party. Add fresh flowers, lighted candles and upbeat music. They’ll help set the mood and require little prep work or expense.
  • After guests have had a chance to eat, drink and mingle, set out a few decks of playing cards and fun board games. Let the mood of the party decide what (or if) you play.
