Types of Massage Therapy

Types of Massage Therapy

Massages can be good for your health. Not only can they help reduce aches and pains, research shows they can also help boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and relieve anxiety.

Here are some of the most popular types of massage.

Swedish

This type of massage is both relaxing and energizing. Swedish massage focuses on the top muscle layers and involves long, flowing strokes, as well as squeezing, kneading and light tapping. It can help relieve muscle tension, pain and joint stiffness.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu means “finger pressure” in Japanese. Therapists apply pressure with thumbs, fingers and palms to acupressure points (the areas believed to help improve the flow of energy in the body). They may also use their feet to massage your lower back, legs and feet.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy massage incorporates concentrated plant oils — like lavender and rosemary — into the massage. Breathing in the aroma from the oil is thought to stimulate emotions and help you relax. This type of massage may help with stress, depression, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, back pain and high blood pressure.

Hot Stone

A massage therapist places warm, smooth stones on the spine, stomach and palms; the warmth from the stones penetrates and soothes the body. This type of massage is deeply relaxing and helps relieve tense muscles. Cold stones may be used to help reduce inflammation and tension.

Thai

A very ancient form of therapy, Thai massage combines deep massage with yoga, stretching and acupressure. It’s especially good for those with chronic pain, migraines and joint pain.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy massage is safe for both mother and baby. Therapists avoid massaging certain areas and use pillows to properly support the mother’s body. This type of massage can help reduce stress, alleviate fatigue and boost circulation. It also may help with pain, tension, stiffness, and swollen ankles and feet.

At Home

If a professional massage doesn’t fit your budget, you don’t have to miss out. Give yourself or someone you love a massage at home. Go to the beauty aisle and pick up lotion or massage oil. Need to learn the tricks of the trade? Grab a massage how-to book and you’ll be ready to give it a try.
