Men’s Shaving Tips

Men’s Shaving Tips
Men don’t need to visit the barber to get smooth, nick-free skin. These simple tips can help him get a close, safe shave at home.
Begin With a Warm-Up

Barbers begin by wrapping a steaming hot towel around the face. Take a cue from the experts — have him prep his skin before he shaves, too.

  • Moist heat softens the beard and helps open pores. He can get the same effect by taking a hot shower before shaving.
  • No time to shower? Washing the face with warm water is the next best thing.
  • Cleanse with a face wash, not bar soap.

Moisturize and Lather

Shaving dries the skin. Dry skin can lead to razor burn, redness and peeling. Moisturizers help get skin back on track.

  • After washing the face, he should use a gentle men’s moisturizer.
  • Get him a heavy-lather shaving cream.
  • Does he have sensitive skin? Find a fragrance-free shaving cream. Avoid gels containing menthol.

Get the Right Tools

His razor is his weapon against stubble. Dull blades can cause nicks and razor burn, so choose a razor wisely.

  • Disposable razors are great, especially for travel (although he can’t take them in carry-on airplane luggage). Make sure to buy a razor with multiple blades, and replace often.
  • He should use a fairly heavy-handled razor. It’ll help him achieve better precision and control.
  • Does he need an on-the-go option? Purchase an electric shaver. Give him one for work, but he should stick to a traditional razor at home to get the closest shave.

Don’t Hurry

Make sure he knows to never rush through a shave. A hurried shave may leave him with cuts and razor burn.

  • Short, careful strokes are key. Long strokes tend to make hair buildup in the blades.
  • Tell him to rinse his razor thoroughly in hot water between strokes.
  • He should stick to light, even strokes — pressing hard won’t give him a closer shave.
  • If his skin is sensitive or prone to bumps, he should shave with the grain of his hair instead of against the grain.
  • When finished, a cold-water rinse will help calm his skin and close pores.

Troubleshoot

Every man’s skin is different. Tell him not to stress if he experiences bumps or redness after shaving. Try these troubleshooting tips:

  • Shop for shaving products made especially for sensitive skin.
  • Help prevent razor burn — give him a gentle exfoliating scrub to use after shaving.
  • He can stop a bleeding nick with a small dab of antiperspirant on a cotton swab. Then, apply the cotton swab to the nick.
  • Does he have dry skin? He should finish up with toner and moisturizer.
