Choosing the Right Haircare Products

Choosing the Right Haircare Products

The secret to a good hair day is choosing the right haircare products. Confused by the assortment of shampoos, conditioners, pastes, gels and mousses available? Here are some quick tips to help.

Wash It

Having trouble picking out the right shampoo? Focus on the three major types:

  • Deep-Cleansing Shampoo: It cleans the scalp and unclogs pores, increasing hair volume and thickness.
  • Conditioning Shampoo: This product moisturizes, smoothes and straightens while controlling frizz and protecting color.
  • Antidandruff Shampoo: The scalp-soothing medicine reduces flakes, itch and dry scalp.
Protect It

Conditioners work with shampoos to protect and maintain healthy hair. They make it easier to comb through any tangles. Select a conditioner based on your hair type:

  • Normal Hair: A normal conditioner maintains your hair’s healthy balance.
  • Dry Hair: A moisturizing conditioner soothes your scalp and combats dryness.
  • Damaged Hair: A protein conditioner protects your hair from the elements and can, in some cases, repairs flyaways and broken ends.
  • Oily Hair: As a general rule, people with oily hair don’t need conditioner. However, you can apply some to dry ends, completely avoiding the roots and scalp. You can also use a lightweight detangling rinse.
Finish It

Want voluminous curls or a sleek and shiny ’do? These haircare products will help:

  • Hair Spray: Finish a style or hold your curls.
    • Before you dry your hair, apply spray. It’ll keep waves or curls intact.
    • Finish your hairstyle with a flexible-hold spray. It helps hold the basic style while allowing some movement.
    • Want to keep your hair completely in place? Select an ultra- or mega-hold spray.
    • A freeze-hold spray helps keep an elaborate hairdo (especially updos) from falling.

  • Mousse: Create volume.
    • Work mousse through wet hair. Pay special attention to the roots and then blow-dry your hair upside-down.
    • Apply mousse on wet hair and then dry it with an infuser. It’ll keep curls or waves intact.

  • Hair Gel: Hold wavy or curly hair, or keep straight, short hair in place.
    • Hair gel is best applied to wet hair and air-dried.
    • Like hair spray, gel comes in flexible-hold and mega-hold options.

  • Hair Wax / Pomade: Manage short hair.
    • Pomade adds shine and texture. It also helps keep each strand of hair in place.

  • Shine Spray: It’s a fantastic finisher for any style, but it’s especially effective on straight hair.
    • Shine spray keeps frizz and split ends at bay. It also adds shine for healthy-looking hair.
