 When to Visit a Specialist

Sometimes allergy symptoms get so bad that avoiding the allergens and over-the-counter medications still aren’t enough. Luckily for the countless sneezers and snifflers dealing with these severe allergies, there is help.

When to Consult a Professional

If allergies really hit you hard, consulting with your family doctor is a great place to start. They may recommend different allergy medications or refer you to an allergy specialist called an allergist or immunologist for dedicated expert care. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to ensure any guidelines regarding coverage for allergy treatment are being met.

A Trip to the Allergy Doctor

Simply put, allergists and immunologists are doctors who focus on how to treat people suffering from conditions such as allergies and asthma. Their specialized training focuses on preventing, treating and managing immune system problems including allergies.

When visiting an allergist or immunologist, expect them to ask you questions about your lifestyle, home and work environment, medical history, allergy symptoms and what treatments you’ve tried. They may also do allergy testing to pinpoint the substances that may be causing your problem.

Armed with this information, the allergist often suggests an individually tailored treatment plan. These plans vary from person to person, but may include lifestyle changes, medication and immunotherapy.

Immuno-what?

Immunotherapy is a treatment for allergies that works like a vaccine; it helps your body become immune to a certain substance. This is done with “allergy shots.” The doctor injects a very small amount of an allergen into the body. By increasing the amount over a series of visits, your body actually gets used to the substance and builds up natural defenses against it.

Does Immunotherapy Work?

Fortunately, many people have good results with immunotherapy and go on to comfortably enjoy the spring season. Serious reactions are rare, but as with any medical treatment, it should always be done in the office of a licensed allergist or immunotherapist.

So don’t fret if you have trouble controlling your allergies. You are not alone and there are specialized doctors out there who can help with a personalized treatment plan targeted to your specific allergies and symptoms.
