• Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM coffee farms produce on average 520 pounds of coffee per acre certified, which divided into 12oz bags yields 693 12oz bags per acre certified.
• 200 million 12oz bags would be produced on an average of 288,600 certified farm acres.
• Certified acres include all parts of the farms: production areas (where the coffee is grown), conservation areas set aside for protection of wildlife and the environment, and areas designated for worker housing and activities such as coffee processing. Per Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM standards for coffee farms, strict conservation areas and fully shaded production areas must represent at least 25% of the certified areas.
• 25% of 288,600 certified acres = 72,150 acres protected or preserved at minimum.

Brazil’s organic coffee annual production from 2006 is approx. 200,000 60kg bags of green coffee. This volume requires 13,000 hectares of farm land. With 13,000 hectares of farm land, conventional growing method would produce approx. 455,000 60kg bags of green coffee.
Using conventional growing method, every 60kg bag of green coffee requires 51 kg (approx. 112.2 lbs) of fertilizers/chemicals. Producing 455,000 60kg bags of green coffee would require 51,158,207 lbs of fertilizers/chemicals.
In general, every 60kg bag of green coffee generates 48 kg roasted coffee. Therefore 455,000 60kg bags of green coffee would generate 48,148,901 lbs of roasted coffee.
Because it takes 51,158,207 lbs of fertilizers/chemicals to produce 455,000 60kg bags of green coffee, using conventional growing method, 1 lb of roasted coffee would require 1.0625 lbs (51,158,207 /48,148,901) of fertilizers/chemicals.
Result: The purchase of 200 million bags of organic coffee could prevent 133 Million lbs of fertilizers/chemicals from going into the earth.
